Australian High Commissioner felicitates AuSLMAT
The Australian High Commissioner, HE Ms Kathy Klugman, felicitated the Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team (AuSLMAT) who arrived in Sri Lanka on 7 June 09.The AuSLMAT team has been regularly visiting and assisting Sri Lanka since the 2004 tsunami. AuSLMAT draws on the services of many dedicated Australian and Sri Lankan health professionals – many of whom are leaders in their fields to conduct free health clinics in rural villages and provide much needed medical equipment to hospitals islandwide. AuSLMAT clinics are designed to provide a service to people who have a chronic medical condition that needs treatment but who cannot afford to see a private medical practitioner on a regular basis.
During this visit the team will be working with the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle and the district hospitals at Matara, Tangalle and Hambantota as well as visiting orphanages in Tangalle and Hatton. In a recent clinic conducted in Deniyaya, the team was assisted by the students of the Deniyaya Central College who will also be felicitated at this event.
